The inability of the UN to halt the genocide in Sri Lanka clearly proves that the mighty organisation has lost all its relevance. Countries like the US and the UK, which clamour against human rights violations in different parts of the world all the time, haven’t been able to persuade the Sri Lankan president to stop the genocide of the Tamil minorities.
The Indian government’s apathy has only aggravated the problem. It is clear that the Sri Lankan government never believed in de-centralisation of power. No other country has ever treated its minority community in as brutal a manner. The LTTE is very much a creation of the Sri Lankan government which has denied its minorities their basic rights, leaving them no option but to take to arms. History will never pardon the lackadaisical manner in which the whole issue has been handled by the Indian government.
