Dinesh Trivedi said he is determined to revamp the railways, but we have little hope considering the experience so far (Coffee with BS: “All leaders must beware their chamchas," January 24). Modernising the railways is undeniably necessary. But as long as political parties will continue to use the railways portfolio to further their interests and ambitions, due attention will not be paid to the problems that ail the Indian Railways.
One of the main defects of coalition politics is that the prime minister has little choice in selecting his ministers. It is because of this that the United Progressive Alliance government and some of its key portfolios like railways and telecom are facing trouble today.
