Rapid improvement in the railway network is the way to go (“Mamata’s China tour”, March 6). Policy makers need to give equal if not more attention to the Railways as they have been giving to sectors like power, roads, education etc.
The railway network is an integral part of building physical infrastructure, but, sadly, people only talk about the sectors mentioned above.
The government and the Ministry of Railways continue to cater to only some geographies without taking into account the larger picture — something that even the Britishers did in the pre-Independence era.
Hopefully, policy makers would soon realise the importance of the Railways in nation-building and appoint a Kapil Sibal, a Kamal Nath, a Jairam Ramesh or a P Chidambaram to lead the long-awaited transformation.
