Letters: UIDAI vs NPR

Apropos the edit “At odds on Aadhaar” (December 15), the Yashwant Sinha Committee should not have questioned the very basis of the project just as much as the Centre should not have implemented it without legislative approval. Did the Centre take the approval of all parties for granted, and is that why some of them (particularly the BJP) are keen to stall the proposals? Questions of accountability arise if the government were to scrap the scheme after more than 15 months of implementation. If, as the Sinha Committee says, Unique ID work and data should be handed over to the National Population Register (NPR), how come the UID authority was created with fanfare and publicity? To say UID was “a scheme conceptualised with no clarity of purpose” is incorrect if you go by the wide-ranging infrastructure created by the authority.
