This refers to T N Ninan's column "Only 'above average'" (Weekend Ruminations, July 26). The latest figures of the United Nations Development Programme's Human Development Report show India in a bad light. The problem lies with our delivery system. The human development indicators expose our claims of development and show that double-digit growth is a myth. The contribution of the agriculture and manufacturing sectors in our gross domestic product (GDP) is minimal, while the service sector contributes to a major portion of the GDP. This is an unhealthy situation. We need to think out of the box on economic matters if we have to achieve inclusive growth. The government has reiterated the citizens' rights for food, education, housing, health care and so on, but it may take time to deliver these rights unless there are structural changes in the system.
