The column, "Broken educational systems", is a good and topical one. Our elder son (in Class X now) is already questioning if he should proceed for studies beyond Class XII or pursue an informal education/open education or a job. He studies in one of the most liberal schools in the country and yet he has this question on his mind! We are encouraging him to take a year off after Class XII and then decide what he wants to do.
Our educational system is built on an unsound foundation, hence even the education imparted in the best school is limiting. The world of education has much to learn from philosopher Ivan Illich and our ustads. It is amazing that after so many years of extraordinary work, especially with his educational non-profit Pratham, Madhav Chavan is saying the best approach to education is "out of school, and learning well".
