The article “Flight of business from Bengal” (May 27) presents a lopsided view of the state. In many social sectors like literacy, health and so on, the Left in West Bengal had done a commendable job. Distribution of land among the landless and agricultural production are two more areas where the government did well. It also gave a fresh impetus to the services sector, especially the IT sector. This even led Azim Premji of Wipro to say that Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was the nation’s best chief minster. The Left Front made a sincere effort to bring the manufacturing sector back on track, but their attempt was foiled by Mamata Banerjee’s agitation in Singur. It was because of its good performance that people of Bengal elected the Left for 34 years. Also one should note than in terms of the gross state domestic product, West Bengal is still among the top five states in India.
