MC Joshi (‘Disband the CBI’, Letters, May 1) is absolutely right when he says it is time to disband the CBI. Over the years, the CBI has been a tool in the hands of the governments who have no qualms in using it to settle scores, to get political rivals to support them, and to let off old friends. If it wasn’t bad enough that the CBI should be used to give a clean chit to those allegedly involved in the anti-Sikh riots in the capital, the same agency was used to free the money held by Ottavio Quattrocchi; it carried on its good work by giving a clean chit to former rivals like Lalu Prasad and Mulayam Singh Yadav.
The Congress managers, it is sad to say, are not exploiting this to the party’s advantage. They need to tell political parties that, if they tie up with the Congress, all past cases will be forgiven; if they don’t, new cases will be registered.
