If only the Tamil Nadu authorities had paid heed to the warnings and suggestions of scientists, the loss caused by the unrelenting rains would have been much less.
Scientists at the Ground and Surface Water Research and Data Centre had predicted that Chennai would not be able to withstand 10 cm of rainfall plus the release of surplus water from Chembarambakkam Lake on the same day.
It is hard to fathom that the scientists' suggestion of constructing a flood carrier from the Chennai river basin was overlooked by the authorities. Now the people of the state are paying a heavy price for the folly of their leaders.
