Jyoti Mukul and Business Standard deserve praise for explaining in simple words the evolution of an institution that has been silently moulding itself to meet the challenges of changing times (“From account checker to conscience keeper” March 10). Vinod Rai was appointed Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) at a time when the country needed a person of his stature for that position. His experience in the finance ministry and the office of the Chief Vigilance Commission (CVC) helped him enhance his analytical and investigative skills. The CAG’s remarkable achievements can be attributed to the interest shown by him in protecting public funds. To ensure that the thrust on “conscience keeping” continues, the present approach of the CAG will have to be institutionalised by providing necessary legislative and administrative support.
