Letters: What a UID!

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and Nandan Nilekani should be congratulated for daring to dream and succeeding where highly-computerised societies have failed. At present, around 110 million people have been enrolled for Aadhaar numbers. The project’s detractors stand defeated — they had pointed at the failure of the UK to issue 61 million cards to its population. But why should we disbelieve our own people? We are enrolling at the rate of one million people a day. Aadhaar is on a roll and it is time India hailed one of its most successful ideas ever. In fact, one wonders if we can export the Aadhaar project to Europe and the US. For the US, with a population of 307 million people, the project size could be $30 billion at $100 per person.
