Arvind Subramanian in his article “India’s inflation mystery” (July 27) expressed surprise at the lack of public indignation despite persistent inflation. Perhaps the reasons are more political than psychological or economic. In a large democracy, a people’s protest needs political leadership that can channel the anger and provide a more credible alternative than the present regime. But in India, all political parties lack the required leadership qualities to engage the public in a movement against price rise. Moreover, people are not sure whether they have the will and skills to check inflation. So though, public rage has become impotent, it is, nevertheless, seething and growing.
