Letters: Why jail for bosses?

Image

Business Standard New Delhi

Contrary to what Sunil Jain says in his column (“Give us a break, Mr Parekh, June 21), the BP blowout did result in 11 deaths. He feels Keshub Mahindra is culpable.

Let me give an example. Suppose the Ahmedabad office of Business Standard had a major electrical problem in 2005 and it wrote to the administrative officer in Delhi — and the quote for repairs was large. The officer said: “Do a patchwork; we are leaving this office in three months.” Two weeks later, if there was a fire in which 10 people died, should T Thomas, the non-executive chairman, and T N Ninan, the editor, have been jailed?
