This refers to the editorial "Questions of integrity" (May 12). As a major national party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) should have taken up the matter with the Election Commission through formal channels, instead of resorting to rhetoric. It is interesting to note that only a couple of months back, BJP's Sushma Swaraj, while speaking at the golden jubilee celebrations of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) at New Delhi, had attacked the United Progressive Alliance government for their oft-repeated accusations on institutions such as the Comptroller and Auditor General and CVC stymieing decision-making in the administration through their over-zealousness. It has been observed that political parties, whether it be the BJP or Congress, have no qualms in attacking constitutional institutions, when the decisions made by the latter do not suit them. This undermines the very root of the workings of the republic. Instead of tarnishing the image of such bodies, leaders should strive to strengthen them, so that an impartial vigil prevails over the functioning of the government.
