The government’s laxity in addressing the grievances of the victims of Bhopal gas tragedy — the country’s worst-ever industrial disaster — is striking. The December 3, 1984 incident is also a grim reminder of the dead-slow approach of the judiciary in handling the tragedy-related cases.
Moreover, assurances, like compensation and job security for the victims, have not been implemented yet. Also, no Indian court has properly attended to the demands and pleas of those who have been affected by the Bhopal tragedy. In the process, the victims have been left in the lurch, and are running from pillar to post for justice. It is high time concrete and effective steps were taken to speed up disposal of the Bhopal tragedy cases to grant the long-delayed justice to the poor victims.
