You have heard of state elections being treated as semi-finals. But the Congress seems to have gone much beyond that and is treating the coming Lok Sabha polls as a semi-final. A senior Congress functionary said he thinks the polls this time wouldn't give any clear verdict. So while a government would be formed, it wouldn't last long, requiring another general election soon. That would be the real final, he said with a winning smile. In short, what this means is that the Congress is waiting for history to repeat itself. Remember the Chandra Shekhar government? Does this mean the Congress has already figured out it would lose this election? The answer was even more confusing: "We will win the elections". Which left it unclear whether the gentleman was trying to dub the coming elections a semi-final for the Bharatiya Janata Party.
