The Communist Party of India (Marxist) may be looking to renew its approach, but in Bengal – a red citadel for long – leftism is what works. If the industry was heaving a sigh of relief with the routing of the Left Front, it is now lamenting it since Mamata Banerjee is turning out to be more leftist than the Left Front itself. Not surprisingly, there is a little bit of leftism in her pet project, the Kolkata Film Festival, as well. The festival attracted quite a bit of private capital, but Banerjee has made it clear that funds are welcome only from public sector companies, with television channels being the only exception.
