After two unsuccessful attempts, the Tata group and Singapore Airlines (SIA) launched their joint venture airline Vistara last Friday. The significance of the occasion was not lost on the delegates at the launch event held in Delhi, as almost all the speakers likened the Tata-SIA joint venture to an alliance made in heaven. First, Vistara Chairman Prasad Menon remarked that the relationship between the Tatas and SIA could be compared to a marriage. Then, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Mahesh Sharma, who also recited Ganesha shlokas on the occasion, added that divorces weren't common in India. Vistara CEO Phee Teik Yeoh joined the chorus saying this marriage was for keeps.
