Punjab Congress President Captain Amarinder Singh (pictured) and his camp slipped into fire-fighting mode over the weekend after Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi refrained from naming him the chief ministerial candidate for the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections during his visit to the state on Saturday.
Delhi Chief Minister and national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party - which is looking to establish a foothold in the state - Arvind Kejriwal seized the opportunity and tweeted on Saturday that the Congress had "ditched the captain" as it announced his candidature for the chief minister's post at first and retracted later. Singh made light of Kejriwal's comments and insisted: "He (Rahul) has said that the Congress party has the tradition of announcing the CM candidate after the elections are over."
