While introducing Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao, who was attending a college convocation as chief guest, the announcer mentioned that Rao had served a one-year jail term. With a number of high-profile scams hitting the headlines in recent years, Rao wasted no time in clarifying that "these days many are sent to jail because of scams. However, I went to jail for a different reason. It was to ensure the country's democracy reigned". During the Emergency in 1975, Rao was imprisoned for a year under the controversial Maintenance of Internal Security Act and served his time at the Central Prison, Warangal.
