Most Congress politicians, even others, speak in hushed tones about “10 Janpath” and the orders that have emanated from there. Going by what BJP Leader L K Advani said the other day, things would have been quite different had he listened to what the late Rajiv Gandhi had told him.
It appears that when the Congress decided to back the minority government of Chandrashekhar and Gandhi was no longer the Leader of the Opposition, he offered to shift out of 10 Janpath to make way for L K Advani. He even proposed, Advani told the audience at a Ficci meeting, that the house be made the permanent residence of the Leader of the Opposition. Advani turned down the offer, and asked Gandhi to stay on.
