Bureaucrats in the finance ministry are making some serious efforts to cut expenditure. So much so that the Central Board of Direct Taxes has directed all officers of the Income Tax Department to make fewer copies of the letters they send to the board to conserve paper and save trees. The move may prove to be just a drop in the ocean as far as government expenditure is concerned, but it may encourage other departments to follow suit.
