Politicians around the world readily accept honorary degrees from universities that are well-known and globally reputed like Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Stanford and so on. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley appear to have overlooked these criteria in accepting honorary degrees from – of all places – the University of Wolverhampton. The mystery is partially cleared when it becomes evident that the Chancellor of the university in this industrial town with a significant South Asian population is Swraj Paul. The Right Honourable Lord Paul of Marylebone, PC to give him his full title, is the Indian-origin British businessman who has made several abortive attempts to hit it big in India since the eighties.
