Managers in a multinational mobile handset major are learning the hard way that they can’t take market share for granted, especially in India. With its market share falling 15 per cent last year and few signs of a revival even now, the company’s top bosses in Chennai are in video conference almost every day with their European headquarters strategising ways to counter low-priced, home-grown rivals. What’s foxed them more now is a new product that’s about to hit the market soon — a phone with a 3” mini DVD player, at an incredible Rs 5,000 price point.
