When the new Environment and Forest Minister, Jairam Ramesh, laid out his priorities — global warming, more transparent implementation of laws and ensuring that his ministry does not become a stumbling block for growth — the first question by a journalist was: “What about tigers? Are you not giving priority to tiger conservation?” Ramesh was quick to reply: “Last night, I met an MP from Assam who was concerned about elephants in his state. You are concerned about tigers. So you see, different people are concerned about different animals, and I’m concerned about all animals.”
