The assault on journalists and students by some lawyers at the Patiala House Courts complex in the wake of the protests at the Jawaharlal Nehru University cast its shadow on a conference in New Delhi. The conference was attended by representatives of leading law firms from India and the United States. "What you read in the newspapers, or see on television, is not the real face of the legal community in India," said Lalit Bhasin, president of Society of Indian Law Firms, in an oblique reference to the incident on the court premises a few days ago. He said the "real" face of the Indian legal fraternity could be seen in that room, referring to the legal luminaries present at the event.
