Companies recycle water, reuse paper or install CFL lamps to save the environment. But Pradeep Bhargava, managing director of Cummins Generator Technologies in Pune, does things differently. He is trying to inculcate among workers the importance of not wasting food. Last week he told a gathering at the CII manufacturing summit that senior officers, including himself, eat in the staff canteen, wash their own plates and set aside the leftovers from the plate. “That is collected and weighed. A chart is put up to indicate how much food is wasted,” he said. The leftover food thus collected is used for vermiculture within the factory. “It is a symbolic way of conservation and the staff take home the message not to waste food,” he added.
