While West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is gung-ho about bringing the state among the top five in the list of states by dropping the word "West", the state is already No. 1 in terms of the number of government holidays.
After a recent notification about an extension of leaves during Durga Puja this year, the number of official holidays stands at 35 days, excluding the five half days granted and 96 weekly-offs on Saturdays and Sundays. This pits West Bengal as a joint first with the northern states of Haryana and Punjab.
