The outrage and uproar over these crimes, indeed their high visibility, is not only because they could happen to you and me (rather than among faceless families in Tier II or Tier III towns or far-flung villages in UP or Haryana, where much worse happens) but because they brutally upturn our notions of the contented, self-contained and successful unit of middle class India
