The Vodafone Crossword organisers introduced an award for fiction in translation in 1999; this was followed by an award for English language non-fiction, and the Popular award. The judging process was usually fun, and Vodafone Crossword judges have been, unlike their counterparts at the Booker, disappointing in their general refusal to stir up controversy.
