Here's an example of the dichotomies that arise from the current regime's bid to promote Hindi as an all-India lingua franca. At a recent conference on labour issues, the talks by the labour secretary and the secretary of the department of industrial policy and promotion were delivered in English. But the text on the screen introducing the session was written in Hindi as were the names of the officials. The video clips shown before the conference were also in English, an indicator, if any were needed, of the limitations of the National Democratic Alliance's linguistic zeal.
