After roping in Ficci Secretary-General Amit Mitra as finance minister, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee now wants a well-known economist of Kolkata —Abhirup Sarkar — to woo investors. Sarkar is a senior professor at Indian Statistical Institute and a vocal critic of the Left Front. Banerjee, according to her close aides, has offered Sarkar the vice-chairman’s chair of the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation — a body aimed to facilitate investment in the state.
