On Tuesday, Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Isaac started tweeting updates as he sat in the GST Council meeting. His tweets were critical of the central government, and misleading in some cases.
For example, he tweeted that the central government wanted to impose a cess on GST to compensate the states. That was in contradiction with the concept of GST itself.
It turned out that the cess was only for ultra-luxury items and products such as tobacco. Senior central government officials, including Finance Minister Arun Jaitley seemed surprised when told about Isaac's tweets.
A bureaucrat later said no one knew that Isaac was tweeting as the meeting progressed. On Wednesday, Day 2 of the three-day GST Council meeting, there were no tweets from Isaac.
