A week ago the Doha Round of multilateral trade negotiations (MTN) came to a grinding halt in Cancun, Mexico. The media (domestic and foreign) is replete with the blame game (who caused the impasse: the European Union, the Americans or the G-21 of developing countries?) and the creation of new heroes and villains.

Most of the Indian media has already crowned Arun Jaitley as the developing country knight in shining armour who tamed the dragons of Pascal Lamy (EU) and Bob Zoellick(US) and ensured that the virtuous stance of developing countries was not besmirched by an unfair deal in world trading arrangements.( It
