The CPI(M) candidate in the Kolkata North constituency, Md Salim, believes in amalgamating the best into his campaign, never mind if it looks quite similar to what his rivals are doing. So, the Congress party may have bought the rights to the Oscar-winning song Jai Ho, ebut Salim has put it into his banners — the logic is that the Congress has bought the music rights, not the right to use the phrase. Trinamool Congress candidate Kabir Suman, in a neighbouring constituency, is famous for his song ‘Toomake Chai’ (I need you); Salim’s posters now have phrases like ‘Abar Tomaake Chai’ (We need you again) and ‘Shudhu Tomake Chai’ (We need only you). Intellectual property activists may frown upon this, but Salim’s campaign is reportedly doing well.
