Congress President Sonia Gandhi is besieged by demands for funds from various arms of her organisation, now that elections are fast approaching. The state units of the party have sought more financial support and the women’s wing, Mahila Congress, has asked for a ‘dedicated fund’. On Wednesday, Gandhi held a meeting with the Mahila Congress leadership to discuss election strategies with the women’s wing leaders.
At the end of the meeting, two major demands were made. One, a dedicated fund of a few crore rupees be set up so as to allow the Mahila Congress to conduct programmes in the run-up to the polls. Two, Prabha Thakur, the Mahila Congress chief, be made a member of the Central Election Committee, the apex body to finalise choice of candidates. Gandhi has not given any assurance on the demands.
