Sri Lanka’s Leader of Opposition, Ranil Wickremesinghe, was in Chennai when the police-lawyer clash in the Madras High Court broke out. Although Wickremesinghe was to have spent a day in Chennai, he was requested to advance his flight, was kept closeted in a room at the Chennai airport and flown back to Colombo the same day. No one in Chennai got wind of the fact that he was in town. Remember, the lawyers in Tamil Nadu were striking because of the operations of Sri Lanka’s government in the country’s northern areas.
