There is speculation that the real reason why Kamal Nath was moved out of commerce and industry and given a truncated roads and highways ministry (with shipping hived off) was his tough stance at the WTO talks. While Kamal Nath espoused the official position that India’s offer on agriculture and industrial goods imports depended on what the West did to reduce their farm subsidies and on the opening up of their the services sector, some in the Congress party feel India’s position has to be softened. With Nath out of the way, this may now be possible.
