Uttar Pradesh is leading other states of the country in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s membership drive by recording around 4.2 million members so far.

"Over 15.4 million persons have joined BJP during the campaign in the country. Uttar Pradesh is the number one with 4.2 million members registered till Monday," BJP state President Laxmikant Bajpai told reporters here.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah had launched the membership drive on November 1.

He said the BJP had decided to launch phase-wise agitation against the Samajwadi Party (SP) government on issues of poor law and order and corruption.

The BJP would rake up issues such as corruption by UP Mining Minister Gyatri Prasad Prajapati, Noida Chief Engineer Yadav Singh graft case and check dam scam and apprise people about them, Bajpai said.

He said the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has joined hands with the SP to save its leaders from being prosecuted under corruption cases of the Mayawati regime.

"The BSP is seen neither on streets nor in the House. It has not fielded candidates against SP in by-elections and the latter (BSP) is defending its leaders from corruption cases," he said.
