If the public has the last word, then the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is likely to form a government in Delhi. The party would take a call on this on Monday.
According to party sources, the party has received 525,000 responses so far from Delhiites on whether the party, which has contested its maiden elections in the Capital, should form a government. A party source revealed that 80 per cent of people who had sent their responses through SMSes, internet and personal interactions till now have said they wanted AAP to form the government.
The Assembly election threw up a fractured mandate, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning 31 seats, AAP 28 and the Congress eight seats. The AAP, eight seats short of a majority, was offered support by the Congress. The Congress clarified they had not offered unconditional support but outside support to the AAP.
The party, last Saturday told Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung that they needed 10 days to decide. They had put 18 demands before the Congress and BJP and asked for their views . “After their response on these issues comes in, we will hold meetings with the public and whatever their decision is, we will accept it. Whether the public wants a re-election or should we form government with support of the BJP and the Congress,” the party chief Arvind Kejriwal had said after meeting Jung on Saturday.
