M S Dhir of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was Friday elected speaker of the Delhi assembly.

Dhir's election came a day after Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal proved his majority in the 70-member house with the backing of the Congress, the Janata Dal-United and an independent.

Opposition BJP fielded its candidate Jagdish Mukhi in the election scheduled later in the day.

Mukhi and Dhir are the only candidates left in the fray for the post after the deadline for filing nominations expired yesterday
