Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today downplayed SP leader Ramgopal Yadav's remark that the state government should check hooliganism, saying action was taken on whatever information was given by him.

"We have taken action on whatever came to our notice. Law and order is a big issue. Whenever such an incident happened, the people's representatives know it all. We are asking them to let the government know about any such activities," he said.

SP national general secretary Ram Gopal had yesterday advised the Chief Minister to rein in goons. He had said the party in its manifesto had promised that the common people would be able to walk freely, but the situation was not so.

Ram had said irrespective of good governance and welfare schemes, if common men live in fear, they would vote out the ruling party. Therefore it was necessary to rein in hooliganism, he had said.

To a question on today's Cabinet meeting, Yadav said it was decided to increase age of specialist doctors to 65 years.

The Cabinet also decided to construct Agra-Lucknow expressway on public-private-partnership (PPP) model as no bidder had come forward for the project, the Chief Minister said.

It gave its nod to increase award money given to scientists from Rs one lakh to Rs five lakh, he said.
