The Left Front parties on Saturday said the World Trade Organization agreement signed by the Indian government at Bali was an "abject surrender".
The All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), an allied organisation of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), in a statement, attacked the government for sacrificing the interests of Indian farmers. It accused the government of ceding the sovereign right of a country to provide food security for hungry millions. AIKS even went on to say the Commerce Minister Anand Sharma had"brokered a deal" with the rich nations.
AIKS said, "We stand opposed to the WTO ministerial decision, which constrains and infringes upon our sovereign right to provide price support to farmers as well as ensure food security for the hungry millions."
Senior Communist Party of India (CPI) leader D Raja said, "The government has not succeeded in protecting our interests. It should have not accepted the decision on public stockholding for food security purposes without discussion in Parliament and state assemblies. The government has acted unilaterally."
