S P Udayakumar, who heads the People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) that has been opposing the Kudankulam Nuclear plant, on Monday announced the launch of a new political party 'Pachai Tamizhagam (Green Tamil Nadu)' that will also contest the upcoming Assembly elections .
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Udayakumar contested the Kanyakumari seat as the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) candidate but later exited the party, alleging alleged that AAP did not meet any of his demands or fulfil any of its promises. He also alleged that AAP's focus has only been on Delhi.
Udayakumar was earlier a professor at Monmouth University in New Jersey, United States.
According to reports, in 2001 he floated the Green Party of India, inspired by the principles of American environmentalist Ralph Nader, for whom he had worked in the American presidential election in 2000.
