The anticipatory bail applications of GJM president Bimal Gurung and his wife Asha Gurung, who is the president of the GJM's women's wing, were rejected by the court of district session judge Anant Kumar Kapri in the Madan Tamang murder case today.

The anticipatory bails were opposed by the public prosecutor, Pranai Rai, who pleaded that law was equal for all.

According to Rai, the two Morcha leaders had filed the anticipatory bails on March 5 after the bodyguard of Madan Tamang, president of All India Gorkha League, filed FIRs against 36 people accusing them of involvement in the daylight murder of Tamang on May 21, 2010.

Among the 36 accused, 18 people are in judicial custody in Kolkata, while seven are on bail while one accused has died in an incident.

The defense lawyer of the Morcha, Dinesh Chandra Rai, said that his clients would move the High Court in the matter.

Madan Tamang was hacked to death in broad daylight on May 21, 2010 when he was overseeing arrangement for a public meeting he was to address.
