Slamming former finance minister P Chidambaram for branding demonetisation move as the "biggest scam of the year", the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday asserted that the Congress leader himself was a champion in doing scams as he presided over a scam of Rs 12 lakh crore.

Speaking to ANI, BJP leader Shrikant Sharma said, "P. Chidambaram is a champion in doing scams. He presided over a scam of Rs 12 lakh crore. The Congress party does not want the development of villages in this country. They do not want corruption to end; if corruption will end then Congress will end. That's why the Congress party is suffering,"

Sharma further said that the Congress party along with other political parties have 'robbed the nation' for 70 years and are suffering because of the campaign against corruption led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"We challenge the Opposition to come to Parliament and discuss, there is still time. They are trying to misguide the people by putting baseless allegations. The people of our nation support the campaign against corruption led by the prime minister," he added.

Earlier, Chidambaram lashed out at the Modi Government for demonetisation of high-value notes and alleged that the recent seizures of new Rs 2,000 notes in various places across the country has unearthed the "biggest scam" of the year. He also demanded a probe through special investigation team in the matter.

"When the government scrapped old denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 and brought new notes of Rs 2,000, how can it be available in large number in recent seizures in Delhi, Bangalore and Jaipur and other places," he said.

Chidambaram further said, "Have those notes reached the places of such people directly from the currency printing press? Has this stopped corruption, black money? The objective is not being served by this."
