The BJP Monday said the centre should take the initiative and plan for the management of crowds at places of worship that see large gatherings.
The suggestion comes in the wake of the death of over 100 people in a stampede at the Ratangarh Mata Temple in Datia district of Madhya Pradesh Sunday.
Addressing a press conference here, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said there were 500 places of worship in India that draw large crowds.
"Such accidents are happening repeatedly and have become a national calamity-like situation," Javadekar said.
"There are 500 such places, and the central government should form a national plan and help states deal with it," he said, adding: "Instead of this, Congress leaders are playing politics over dead bodies."
