Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday demanded change in the work timings under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Gurantee Act (MNREGA) and alleged that the state government's 'negligence' was taking a toll on the labourers.
He alleged that five labourers died due to heatstroke in Banswara, Jalore, Ajmer, Nagaur and Jhalawar during MNREGA work in the recent days but the government has not changed the timings.
Gehlot said the timings were changed in summers during his rule but the BJP government had "nothing to do" with the labourers and was "neglecting" the matter.
The time for MNREGA workers during the Congress-rule was from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Besides, the government should also make proper arrangements for sheds, drinking water, medicines and other necessary things, Gehlot said in a statement.
