BS Reporter Bangalore
Tamil Nadu former chief minister J Jayalalithaa and three others convicted last week by a court here are to stay in jail at least till Tuesday. That is when the high court (HC) will hear their pleas for bail.

All four were found guilty in a case involving Rs 66.65 crore of disproportionate assets. The ruling was on Saturday.

Hearing the petition, Justice Rathnakala said it was not appropriate for the vacation bench to hear the matter as it requires thorough review and it should be done only by the regular bench and posted the hearing to October 7, 2014.

Renowned criminal lawyer Ram Jethmalani appeared for Jayalalithaa and others. The appellants had sought suspension of the sentence and release on bail.

The four have been sentenced to four years in jail and a fine of Rs 100 crore has been imposed on Jayalalithaa and Rs 10 crore each on the others.

Jayalalithaa, her close associate Sasikala Natarajan and relatives V N Sudhakaran and J Ilavarasi are lodged in the Parappana Agrahara prison since Saturday after they were convicted in the DA case under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Meanwhile, the state’s textile sector has decided to show solidarity with Jayalalithaa. The industry has decided to shut on Saturday. Around 15 assocations, including Tirupur Exporters Association and The South India Hosiery Manufacturers' Association took the decision.
