Even as he condemned the killings of two dalit children in Haryana's Sunperh village, allegedly by upper-caste Thakurs, Minister of State for External Affairs remained defiant and unapologetic for his statement comparing the crime with the stoning of dogs.
Reminding the media of the several years he spent in the Army, Singh apparently expressed no remorse for the statement and instead blamed the media for blowing it out of proportion. He also suggested that members of the fourth estate 'visit Agra' in a slanted reference to their need for psychiatric treatment.
The Minister's defiance met with strong criticism from all quarters, with one Congressman even going to the extent of saying that with friends like V K Singh, the Prime Minister needed no enemies.
Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party member Ashutosh joined the voices that called for Singh's sacking, and said that his party would be filing a criminal case against the minister under the SC/ST Act.
Earlier, the Congress targetted Singh, with Anand Sharma calling his statement insenstive, shocking and statement, and unbecoming of a former General of the Indian Army. Manish Tewari had called for Singh's immediate sacking and called for criminal proceedings against him.
